What are the main tasks as CEO of the Bosch Start-up Platform?

There is a lot of networking and communicating in and outside of Bosch, to explain what we do and to learn from others. And then the doing itself: to cater for our start-ups together with my team.

What are the differences between your work today and your work in the „big“ Bosch before?

Compared to classic Bosch we can create the rules we play by rather than following existing ones. This presents us with both opportunities and challenges.

Why does this job as CEO pique your interest?

We really create something new, not only for Bosch. And I enjoy finally implementing a concept that I have worked on for years.

Do you still have a private life?

Of course. Even with this exciting job I love my family still more.

Allrounders have lots of tasks. What are yours?

I have diverse and miscellaneous tasks at the Bosch Start-up Platform, like a colorful bouquet of flowers. Amongst other things I handle the orders, I book all travels for my colleagues, I organize our events and coordinate the craftmen (and we still need them a lot). So in many issues I’m the first contact person for our start-ups.

Is it easier or more difficult for you as an assistant to work in a small subsidiary than in the corporate?

Since we are a Basic rules Company we are more flexible and faster in realizing our ideas and possibilities as other business units or departments within the Bosch Corporation. Therefore, I can be more creative and affect the Platform, its processes and organizational issues.

What‘s your main challenge?

To get our start-ups started and to assist them with their first steps…

Why did you decide to join the Bosch Group or – more precisely – the Robert Bosch Start-up GmbH?

My decision to join the Platform team was based on my interest to do something completely new and experience a different type of work than in the past. I was fascinated by the idea to learn more about the start-up scene and to become part of a flexible and dynamic working culture.

What did you do before joining us (in career terms)?

Before joining the platform team I was working in the publishing sector for two different newspapers. In my role as an allrounder, I had responsibilities in the customer service, the distribution department as well as in advertisement design.

What is your main challenge here?

Personally, the main challenge for me consists in adapting to an entire new working environment and integrating myself in a challenging field of work. As I have gained experience in the publishing sector in the past, this is my first professional encounter with start-ups. Besides, it’s a challenge to orientate myself in the big “Bosch world” – luckily, our great team helps me a lot to have a good start.

And what are your main tasks within the platform now?

My main tasks focus on the overall support of the Bosch start-up GmbH which concerns many different kinds of matters. I assist my colleagues by taking care of order and booking processes, the incoming of goods or appointment coordination. My range of tasks will be broadened in the near future and will for example include the organization of events.

You probably don’t plant any seeds or grow flowers and vegetables, so what exactly does your job as Seedmanager entail?

That’s right, my job isn’t about flowers and vegetables, but rather ideas and people. Just as gardeners select the right seeds, my task is to select the right ideas and people, with the support of my colleagues, then to create the right conditions so that the “seedlings” or start-ups can grow and flourish. It’s all about nurturing and tending. On the one hand, this involves supplying with nutrients or giving support, and on the other, pruning the withered parts and creating space for new growth. We need “green fingers” for plants, but rather a “lucky hand” for start-ups.

Supporting young, small start-ups undoubtedly requires a certain amount of experience. Did you previously work in the start-up sector?

Oh yes, I got to know and supported some really great technology-oriented start-ups over the past three years at the Knowledge Factory (www.wissensfabrik-deutschland.de). The idea of the Knowledge Factory is to provide start-ups with access to the knowledge and experience of experts and mentors from well-established companies. We held discussions and conducted surveys and interviews to identify the start-ups’ problematic areas which could benefit greatly from the network’s support. We then devised various appropriate formats, found the right experts, carried out some tests, made some adjustments, looked for more experts, did certain things differently again, made further adjustments, etc. The results included first-hand reports from mature start-ups, workshops with experts from various companies, speed mentoring sessions, etc. It never ceases to amaze me how much energy is released when working with start-ups and I’m really keen to continue this here at grow.

What, in your opinion, is the biggest challenge/the greatest adventure for start-ups?

That’s a tricky question... Start-ups face a multitude of constantly changing challenges. The bigger and more successful the start-up becomes, the more demanding the challenges also become. Viewed in this light, the biggest challenge of all is the ability to adapt to new situations quickly and learn to deal with situations even faster so as to qualify for the next level.

Communication, Marketing and Brand Management seems to be an interesting job. What does it mean exactly?

I‘m mainly responsible for all communication, marketing an brand topics of the Platform, within and outside the Bosch Group. In other words: I feed our website, organize internal and external events and I‘m the contact person for press inquiries. I support our start-ups in marketing issues and build the interface between the Bosch Corporate and the Corporate Platform.

Was it always your passion to work as communication and PR specialist?

No, not at all. I started work as a market researcher at Miele before joining Bosch in 2005 as assistant. Before becoming communication specialist I worked as project controller in the Corporate Sector of Research and Advance Engineering. As you can see, I like changes, both occupationally and personally. And I always liked to communicate (like all women do) but never before I got the chance to do it professionally and on behalf of Bosch.

What‘s your „message“?

The Bosch Start-up Platform is the professional home for start-ups, which develop new, sustainable and profitable business in new markets and outside existing Bosch business fields. We cultivate Corporate Entrepreneurship within the Bosch Group and agility by a new innovation culture and a culture that is tolerant of mistakes. We are Bosch’s way of analyzing and testing radical ideas that come with a certain risk, while preventing opportunities from going to waste. With the Start-up platform, Bosch will in the future be a company of differing speeds. It will be a company that preserves its old strengths (innovation leader, outstanding quality, reliability, efficient processes) whilst also becoming very agile in less predictable fast-evolving areas. Sure, you will not tend sheep or herd other animals. What are your tasks within the Platform?

Replace sheep by money and you got it. I am the guardian of the money. Whenever money comes into play – I am here. Further it is my target to promote an understanding for compliance. In my opinion a very important aspect of our business.

What do you do to not become just a bean counter?

I try to understand why my colleagues act like they do.

Are numbers your passion?

Absolutely yes! If every language could be „verbalized“ into numbers, I would be a linguistic genius. – But I´m not.

There are lots of controller jobs inside the Bosch Group. Why did you decide to change to the Bosch Start-up Platform?

Working at Robert Bosch Start-up GmbH is a daily challenge and never boring. Perfect for me!

That’s your first job at BOSP after having finished your studies. Why did you decide to start your career with the Bosch Start-up Platform team?

I had to decide between starting at Robert Bosch start-up GmbH or in a traditional department within the Bosch Group – and to be honest: It wasn’t a very difficult decision for me to take the opportunity to work in a team which tries to combine the best of the start-up world with the advantages a multinational company as Bosch has – a task which seems to be very complex but even more interesting to me!

Your first impressions?

Controlled chaos. Not only do our start-up teams learn, but also we as the platform team. What seems to be good or “good enough” today, can be obsolete tomorrow. Therefore, the most important thing is to be flexible and to work strongly together with the other team members to get different views on a topic – a fact that I like. To put it in a nutshell: I really like my tasks and to work together with the Platform team!

What are your main tasks within the Platform?

I’m mainly responsible for controlling topics (money, money, money,…) and process optimization – currently more implementation then optimization. Somehow I see myself as a connection between the Bosch Group and the Robert Bosch start-up GmbH, translating the requirements of the startups to our corporate colleagues and the other way round. In general: I try to support the teams in commercial questions or find experts who can do so. But as already mentioned: to be flexible is very important – so these are my main tasks, but in fact you can never be sure what you are going to do exactly next month.

Why did you decide to join the Bosch Group or - more precisely - the Bosch Start-up Platform?

The Bosch Group represents highest quality and offers its employees very good working conditions and a great social commitment. I have decided to join Robert Bosch Start-up GmbH because it is a young, dynamic, ambitious subsidiary of the Bosch Group, and embodies all the mentioned values. When I entered the facilities for the first time, I felt right away that something great is developing here. A modernly equipped workplace is as important as a harmonious, productive collaboration with colleagues. I am very happy to be a part of this friendly team.

What did you do before you joined us?

Before I joined the Robert Bosch Start-up GmbH, I gained my first work experience at Loony gGmbH SD. I was in charge of different processes at the warehouse and distribution. I was also responsible for customer acquisition and a few tasks in the Marketing department. Working in the sales department and having contact with customers required a high degree of flexibility, organizational skills and friendliness.

What’s your personal challenge here?

I am a person who wants to evolve continuously. I do not stop at one point but always try to get to the next level. Facing challenges, solving tricky tasks, and learning new things have always been fun for me. At the Robert Bosch Start-up GmbH, I want to use my strengths to contribute to the company’s success.

What made you decide to work in the HR department at Robert Bosch Start-up GmbH?

I believe that a company’s keys to success include having the right employees on board in the right positions, promoting talent and fostering company loyalty among employees. In my role as HR Business Partner I can therefore contribute towards the company’s success. In start-ups, which often grow fast in a short space of time, selecting the right staff is a particular challenge. I like the creative chaos, the motivation and the “roll up your sleeves and get to work” ethos among start-up employees.

What do you see as your greatest challenge?

My greatest challenge is to work fast and flexibly on a daily basis, while constantly keeping an eye on the budget. In start-ups, the number of employees sometimes grows so incredibly fast that the trick is, in addition to expanding the workforce, to develop the key topics in the areas of management, HR development, staff loyalty and knowledge management. That’s the only way to ensure a solid basis for the start-up.

As well as being our HR Business Partner, you also offer services for other small entities as part of our “Shared Services”. How does it feel to provide support to other start-ups, too?

It’s impressive to see how fast start-ups develop in all areas. On a personal level, I find it great to experience this positive and pioneering spirit and of course, last but not least, the fact that my work is appreciated. That’s particularly prevalent among start-ups. My work is a daily challenge that I’m happy to take on and really enjoy.

The Human Resources department is very diverse. What is your precise role at Robert Bosch Start-up GmbH?

My tasks as HR Business Partner are as varied as our start-ups and the legal entities we manage. I support our entities from their creation and development to their transfer at the end of the start-up phase. Labour law and organisational topics naturally play a crucial role in my work, but I also find it really important to support the employees.

You previously worked for the “big” Bosch. How does working for us differ from working at Bosch?

Working in the start-up field is highly individual. Depending on the topics at hand, I have to quickly come up with pragmatic solutions that are tailored to the specific situation. Of course, there are certain standards that have to be maintained, but due to our small size we have reduced this number to a minimum. An incidental benefit of this comparatively smaller scale of support is that I know every employee by name and am therefore very much in touch with the topics and the team.

As part of our Shared Services, you not only support many different employees but also employees from different legal entities and start-ups. How does that translate into your day-to-day work?

Each legal entity or start-up is entirely unique. As I support start-ups in many different areas – from IOT to service provision – I am confronted with different demands and needs on a daily basis. The advantages of this are (i) that I have a great deal of freedom to come up with ideas and solutions and (ii) that I can put my experience in one area to good use in another.

Why did you opt for a job in the start-up sphere – and more importantly – for a job at Robert Bosch Start-up GmbH?

I chose to work for Robert Bosch Start-up GmbH because it is a young, up-and-coming company of the Bosch Group and I'm keen to contribute my knowledge, strengths and creativity to the firm.

Where did you work previously and what were your day-to-day tasks?

I previously worked in the exhaust-gas sensor sector, at the prototype construction plant in Rutesheim. While I was there, I produced the first prototypes of various lambda probes, in close cooperation with the R&D department, and supervised manufacturing up to small-series production.

In many sectors, the tasks of facility managers and workshop managers are often distributed among various people or “bought” as a shared service. What are your priorities here with us?

My priorities are coordinating and supporting external companies, managing the workshop plus many other interesting tasks that will come my way over time. I very much look forward to rising to the challenge.
